EchoTrack is a science based business focused on developing the very best technology for surveying and tracking all airborne wildlife. Primarily, we provide Environmental Assessment (EA) studies for renewable energy developers who must meet regulatory requirements to mitigate for potential impacts on birds, bats, and other wildlife, in the pre– and post– construction phases of their development projects. Tracking of Airborne Wildlife Using purpose-built technology, EchoTrack provides passive observation of the behavior of birds and bats in a diverse range of applications, such as EA, aviation safety, and agriculture, including analysis of the data captured and EA reports.

Consulting EchoTrack offers expertise in program management, field studies, interpretation and report, risk prediction, risk-response modeling, expert opinion, expert witness, and research.

Leasing EchoTrack can provide a surveillance system on a lease basis, with training of field staff on the proper operation of the system. This option enables customers to coordinate the use of the system on several concurrent projects.

EchoTrack pioneered the integration of radar and acoustic technologies in an advanced airborne wildlife surveillance system that identifies what animals are present and isolates their flight paths, including height. Some key features of the EchoTrack Radar-Acoustic Surveillance System are:

  • Standardized, automated, simultaneous radar surveying of all concurrent bird and bat flight paths. Unbiased by human observation, the data collection process is repeatable for a better prediction of risk.
  • Omni-directional bat sensor detecting bat frequencies to 100 m. All frequencies and intensities are recorded, ensuring quiet and rare species are detected.
  • Operates 24/7 if required, and in any light or weather conditions.
  • Data that consistently meets regulatory requirements; is accurate and defendable.
  • Data quality and volume that may be interpreted by Geographic Information Systems (GIS), mathematical modeling and population level impacts on focal species.

On Our Radar

EchoTrack in South Africa

Working with several large wind energy providers and local biologists in the Western Cape region, EchoTrack is providing pre- and post-construction risk assessments designed to investigate nocturnal movements of birds in areas planned for wind turbine development. Local biologists and observers conduct nighttime field monitoring with the objectives of monitoring when visual survey is not possible, and of maximizing the volume of coverage so multiple birds could be surveyed simultaneously and over a large area.

Meet Danielle...

Danielle Dagenais is a Masters student at Simon Fraser University (SFU) in Vancouver, Canada. With assistance from EchoTrack, Danielle obtained an Industrial Postgraduate Scholarship with the National Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) for her two years at the University. The objective of Danielle's research is to determine whether vineyards provide foraging habitat to bats, and to identify which bat species will forage over vineyards in British Columbia's South Okanagan Valley. Danielle used the EchoTrack Radar–Acoustic Surveillance System to complete 36 nights of sampling, tracking the bats over vineyards and adjacent natural habitat. Danielle compared activity levels over the study sites to determine whether vineyards provide feeding opportunities to bats. EchoTrack is proud to support Danielle with her Masters work by providing funding for her scholarship, training, guidance and equipment. Our President is an adjunct professor at SFU and thesis advisor for Danielle.
